The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is a unique school. It's in a somewhat isolated geographical area, yet it's a short drive from both Milwaukee & Chicago. It has a world-class theatre program (among many other academic programs), but is often perceived as merely a community college. The Viewbook needed to challenge the stereotypes prospective students had of the school, and draw them in to learn more of its story. The two themes emphasized in the 2008 edition were green and real. Green, to emphasize the efforts the school was making towards sustainability, and real to resonate with prospects who frequently receive highly polished university marketing materials that do not reflect the authentic culture of the school.
In an effort to hold true to these themes, we made the production and design of the book as real and green as possible. I created numerous illustrations in pencil, pen, and marker, which I scanned and paired with pictures from student photographers throughout the 20-page book. I conceived & advocated for the tagline on the back of the book: “The Middle of Nowhere, in the Middle of Everywhere,” as well some of the other illustrations to highlight the school's nature. To help minimize the project’s environmental impact, it was printed on 100% recycled paper with no bleed.
